Noites de Gafieira II
Hello again!
Following last month’s successful event, we have a second helping of Brazilian Gafieira dance and music on May 9, 2009 at The Beat in Berkeley.
Noites de Gafieira
Dear students and friends,
We have a terrific event coming up on Friday, March 27 at 8 p.m. at The Beat in Berkeley that I’m sure you will all enjoy. “Noites de Gafiera” will be an evening of music and dance from Brazil and beyond: Come with a dance partner, or on your own, as a student of Gafiera couple’s dance, or someone hoping to learn. There will be live music with Celia Malheiros, as well as a DJ playing samba, forro, pagode and salsa. I will be teaching introductory Samba de Gafiera and other dance steps.
This event could be the start of something ongoing – come out and support it!With care,
Mestre Beicola
Covenant of the Sacred Heart Highschool Performance
We had the oppurtunity to play some capoeira in front of 250 screaming teenage girls at Sacred Heart Highschool in SF last Monday. We were like rockstars–just kidding! While they weren’t acting like rabid fans, they enjoyed our little show and we had a lot of fun performing. We started with a little capoeira history, followed by some singing, and then a few games (sorry some pics are blurry). We also had time to teach a few students some capoeira–there were no problems finding volunteers from the crowd. After the show, our host Rachel showed us her classroom. She teaches art at the school. Being surrounded with all that art got our creative juices flowing capoeira style. Hopefully, we’ll get to perform there again real soon. Thank you Sacred Heart High!
Parents’ Weekend Roda at Stanford
Hi everyone!
Here are some photos from the latest roda. Our group demonstrated for a bunch of middle school students and other passing tourists at the Stanford Main Quad. It was a beautiful day, and everyone had a great time. Thanks to everyone who came, and a special thanks to the photographer.
COW – Concept of the Week
Focus
Like Arjuna shooting his arrow straight to the eye of his target, focus only on the goal.
Call it tunnel vision, call it concentration – in the end, just don’t let peripheral distractions obscure your aim.
Recap of the story from the Mahabharata:
“After his brothers all attempted to shoot the wooden bird, it was Arjuna’s turn. He readied himself, his bow and arrow in perfect position! When his Guru asked him, “Arjuna, will you tell me what you see?”
Arjuna replied, “Sir, I only the eye of the bird.” When asked by the teacher whether he was able to see the bird, the tree, and people around, Arjuna replied that he saw nothing but the eye of the bird only.
Arjuna’s teacher was pleased with his immense concentration and correct approach towards the art of archery.”

Capoeira Coffee Break
Oi capoeiristas,
Ever need a little pick-me-up in the afternoon? Wish there was an alternative to coffee? Can’t wait until 6:30 to start playing capoeira? Here’s your solution: join the capoeira-coffeebreak mailing list!
The purpose of the capoeira-coffeebreak mailing list is to facilitate spontaneous afternoon capoeira practice. The idea is that you’d email the list with a suggestion of when and where to meet, e.g. “Anyone up for handstands near the Clark Center, in about 15 min (4:30)?” Sound easy? It is.
You can sign up here:

Best,
Rachel
